The difference is that a "short" toe film will yield transfer from linear to
full black very shortly. By that I mean that it is the same as film over
exposed where the shadow detail is on the linear portion of the curve. In
colour, there is no real difference. However, in B&W, Placement of the
shadow on the toe yields some detail in the shadow areas before the print
goes fully black. In B&W, you must adjust your exposure, development, and
printing practices to yield satisfactory detail in the shadow areas.

Older emulsions like Tri X and Plus X have a long toe compared to the
later......that is why they are still in production. For an excellent
reference, I recommend the bood "Beyond the Zone System" by Phil Davis.
