I had a most amazing heat damage episode a few years back. The
film was heat damaged in sections about 4 inches long, unevenly
spaced on the film.
What had happened was that the fellow was on a tourbus on a
rather hot and sunny day, and was keeping the camera lens down
between his legs, with the camera back directly exposed to the
sun. This damaged the film sitting directly under the back. When
he took pictures, he was advancing the damaged film, and another
few to several frames to where it wouldn't get heat damaged, and
on and on.
I have seen many instances of heat damage to film, sometimes the
source is obvious from the subject matter, sometimes not.
The damage can be visibly noticable on the film, but not overly
noticable on the prints, if not too severe.
I do think you have to be malicious to get heat damage. Pointing
your dashboard into the hot summer sun all day with your camera
on it is pretty much what it takes.
