Before removing the top, did you check the bottom? If it is like the SP, there will be a contact for the battery compartment mounted on the casting. Check this first.
If the meter does not respond at any shutter/film speed setting, then the coil in the meter is open. I believe circuit is a bridge and, unless the meter is open, the needle will respond when the switch is operated.
