>From my files:

Bill Long asked about several of the Sigma lenses. A friend, a birder as
it happens, uses the Sigma 135~400 on her N70. She is very knowledgeable
about her subject and is more than happy with her choice of the lens. I
have used it and noted that the focus is swift and sure. The heft of the
beast makes it a sure tripod sitter or, at the least, something to use with
a shoulder stock. Her results appear clear - - edge to edge - under the
loupe.

Pascal De Paux: I recently read a test at Focus (a Dutch photo mag.) where
they tested four Sigmas: the 135400, the 170500, the 300, and the 400.
The 135400 did indeed get a very good review, and even an award. They used
an MTF (modulation transfer function) test method, whereas the CdI mag.
uses the 2E test. (?) They said the 135400 is very good up to 300 and
becomes a bit soft at 400mm, but not as soft as the Tokina 80-400. But,
they said, if you need a 400mm only, the fixed-focus Sigma 400mm is better.
