Rob- I think you'll find manual focus to be much better for action shots of auto racing- focus on a point and shoot when the car comes into frame.
Not having used AF SLRs much at all, one thing that would work if you can focus lock on a particular spot but be able to easily override in case a spectacular crash occurs or something like that where the AF will help (depending on distances), although if you're stopped down enough, it's not going to be too bad if you're a tad off. I never thought AF was all that great for motorsports, but I don't have any AF cameras (other than P&S).
