Rob, I am not sure what you are talking about. AFAIK, both EZCD Creator and Nero (bundled with most CD writers) do have a "verify" option. And in command line world, "cp -R /dev/cd /dev/null >& errlog" or something similar does the verification just as well. And yes, checking the newly burned CD for read errors is crucial.
