XP is intended to be the replacement for 95/98/ME *and NT. Microsoft had been
fed up with supporting two different operating systems for some time and made no
secret of their desire to unify the two systems. It's built on NT-type
archetecture, but XP is intended to be the common upgrade from both Win2k (NT)
and 95/98/ME.
