Hah! Brendan, I challenge you to 'own' a Mac for...lessee, 6 months, 3 months minimum. *Then* re-state the above and I will accept your judgment with the gravitas that it will possess. Naturally folk would expect me to say that Macs are better - but actually I do not believe that to be the case. Fundamentally, I think that there is no difference between them, they are both types of computer, and there is no such thing as one being 'better' than the other, except purely on an individual basis, and pertaining to individual taste and desires. My sister's bloke runs Photoshop on fast PCs and he swears by them. He take's the piss out of me a lot about how Macs are expensive trinkets, but once the joking subsides he admits that neither is 'better'. Most people these days start out on a PC because they are the most prevalent. They are the least expensive to purchase new, and so are likely to end up in more schools, more teenagers' bedrooms, more desks in the study/den/lounge. Kids grow up and carry on with what they know. Our graphics dept is staffed by twenty-somethings and aside from the propriety tv graphics system, they have a PC and Mac. The Mac almost never gets used. These kids grew up with PCs and they are *graphics* people! One time, most people would comment that 'Macs are supposed to be better with art and graphics' - but this is not necessarily the case. For those who know and use both platforms, depending on what is required, either can work just as well. Of the advantages that I believe make the Mac more suited to such work over the PC, I would list the built-in colour synchronisation software (ColorSync), the generally very user-friendly interface, the general stability of the OS (I use only Classic - not OS X), and the boxes are pretty :-) One other point I would make is that yes, they are more expensive to purchase new, but I've only ever bought 2 new Macs. One was very expensive ( a PowerBook 1400 in 1998 for 1700 GBP) and the other an end of line bargain (iMac 450 CD in 2000 for 675 GBP). Every single other mac I've owned has been bought used or in bits for little money. My main machine is a laptop I built. Note: I am *not* an electronics engineer. I learned what I needed to and progressed accordingly. This can easily be achieved with PCs also. I think what folk forget is that inside, there is no difference between Macs and PCs except for the brand of the processor! Inside both boxes you will find some identical components. There's nothing mystical about a Mac. Finally, (sorry for the long post, but if you've got this far you must be interested ;-) as I mentioned earlier, it is entirely down to individual taste as to which platform is 'better'. Unless a person has experienced both platforms for a reasonable period of time, I would not pay much attention to any claims made by that person, except at face value. So I repeat the challenge! C'mon Brendan, borrow a Mac for a few months!!!! (Disclaimer: I used a Windows 95 box for a few months as a personal test, and I use NT machines at work when I'm there, which isn't often) Cheers to you whatever platform you're on, Cotty PS Brendan ads: >And, Apple stole everything about the MAC from Xerox PARC, just down the >road >from me in Silicon Valley. They stole the GUI, the Mouse, networking, >email...everything! So, to say that Gate's was copying MACS is only accurate >as long as you ackwnoledge that MACS are a ripoff in themselves! Like Steve >Jobs is some saint. The guy's an total a-hole by reputation. Every bit as >ruthless and cut-throat as Gate's (probably why they're both very rich). All totally true from info I have. That's not the half of it! _______________________________________________________ Personal email traffic to [EMAIL PROTECTED] MacAds traffic to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Check out the UK Macintosh ads http://www.macads.co.uk - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
