I have no idea what is Golf I, but I have raced against a friend's Civic Si and my GTI GLX (MkIV) kicked crap out of it repeatedly, regardless of who of us was driving which car. In particular, starting up, due to a lot more torque of V6 engine. Btw, the same goes for Acura Integras. And in terms of "bang for a buck" Golf is far ahead of any japanese competition, which just feels... well, cheap. WV feels almost like a beemer for half the money. The reliability (mine's made in Germany except for Mexican ashtrays) -- so far (3 years) has been 100% trouble free, despite my style of driving. No, WV doesn't pay me for advertizing :(
