I do not know what the GNs for all ISOs are, nor do I
really understand how to figure it out. What I do know
is that if your lead photographer is "setting his
flash to f8" he is ~not~ going full manual. It sounds
as if he is using an automatic flash whereby he sets
his desired output in fstops on the flash and a sensor
on the flash tells itself to quench when the "proper"
amount of light has reached the subject. And I also
know that it is not because of the TTL that your
backgrounds came out underexposed. When the light
level drops beyond some certain level, the camera will
start choosing shutter/aperature combinations based
solely on giving you a sharp handheld flash
illuminated photograph. If you use your camera in
program mode in low light you will get dark
backgrounds. The rememdy is not to burden yourself by
trying to memorize a thousand numbers and try to
perform calculations while shooting an event as
important as a wedding. God I can hardly stand the
stress of a wedding as it is... :P The solution, if
you insist that you must have more exposed background,
is to set your ~camera~ to manual and try to set it to
properly expose for the ambient light. Then you can
set your flash to TTL and bang away and you will have
good backgrounds and flash illuminated subjects.
