I have never had a chance to handle one of these critters before,
but I haven't had much interest in locating one, either. The
combination of a miserly 1.5:1 zoom ratio is not overly enticing,
and having a variable aperture is not exactly a plus for me, either.
To me, the idea of producing a zoom mirror was a gutsy decision by
Pentax, although I doubt that many were sold, so "gutsy" may not
necessarily imply "savvy".

Something like a 250-600/5.6 zoom would make a lot more sense to me.
I've owned a Tokina AT-X 150-500/5.6 previously, and found 150-500
to be a useful zoom range (with constant aperture) (although the
lens is a little soft above 300mm). I'm looking forward to shortly
trying out a K 135-600/6.7 - that also seems like it should be a
useful zoom range (and with that - to me - very desirable constant
aperture) - I do hope it's sharper than the 150-500/5.6.
