I think both have pros and cons (I use Minolta Scan Elite F-2900). Slides: Dense slides are a real pain to scan. Provia 100F has the finest grain after scan so far. Sensia 100 & E100VS are good too. Colour negatives: Some appear very grainy while some are perfectly fine. Colour rendition could appear strange with some negatives (skin tone with Reala for instance). The current Kodak Gold 100 appears very grainy after scan.
