The K1000 was/is the student camera (in NA). If you spend any time at any of the other photography sites/mailing lists, you will see and endless number of, "I started with a K1000, and really loved it, then moved on to brand xyz." I suspect that the US and Canadian Pentax distributors tried to make Asahi Optical aware of the situation, and were ignored.
