For those interested (I'd think you may be if you're reading this) :)
here's the latest info on the mysterious "why doesn't my focus remain
throughout the zoom range" dilema that I'm having with my smc-a 35-105 f3.5
lens:

Pentax Canada service (I went in there this morning in person - small front
desk - usual literature etc and people scurrying about while 2 of them sit
and do nothing but open boxes and unpack cameras for servicing) took a look
at the lens. Their diagnosis? "Hellicoid and rollers are gone and will
need replacement but we don't have the parts and this is an old lens."

I didn't think it was THAT old... checking Boz's site.. the lens was made
b/w 1984 and 1989 so it's as old as 18 years and as young as 13 years - a
mere baby compared to .. say.. my Pentax SL.

Anyway, now it was off to test the waters at Frank's place; Kominek Camera
( http://www.kominek.com ). They're in my work neighbourhood so I dropped
in and let them take a look at it. They took the lens, I should get an
estimate on costs by next week Thursday/Friday as long as their Pentax guy
can fix it.

If they're good.. I may decide to make them my place as well (like Frank).
They were very personable, which was nice, much more so than Pentax Canada
- but then again, Kominek's are owned by the guy I'm talking to across from
the counter.

Will let you know the outcome once I hear from them.

*crossing fingers*
Dave
