I think there is no such a definition - today's equipment needs sophisticated OSes - the difference is that they are usually no breakable by normal user action - they are simply encoded in ROM chip and they are written especially for this equipment. But many of them allows some type of user intervention - like flash ROM updates or plug-ins in Digita OS - and that's the way viruses could be written and run eventually, doing some weird things with your new DSLR ;-)
