For months my lab bitched at me for using Portra, but they looked ok
to me so I didn't do anything about it.

One day he enlarged one of my negs, made a copy on Fuji paper, one on
Kodak paper. They both looked fine by themselves, but side by side you
could see an obvious color tinge in the whites on the Fuji paper. The
color response of the film isn't flat. Basically you can't get white
whites *and* perfect skin with Portra with anything other than Kodak
paper. They're basically made for each other.

Weird. I always thought the Fuji was sharper and had finer grain, but
preferred the Kodak color rendition on Kodak paper over Fuji.

In the last month or so I've switched from doing about 10% of my work
on the 645n to about 75%. Grain isn't really an issue now...
