Shaun,

My experience is only a couple of weeks at a time in the tropics (jungle)
visiting family or working at an archaeology site.

I always cart the LXen with me. The only problem I have ever had was
humidity getting to the hotshoe. It would work well inside (no air
conditioning) but was intermittent outside. And it was just one LX that did
that.

The LX never hiccuped. And this includes shooting in the rain, which I have
done again and again since then. I like the LX since it can work
mechanically at most speeds.

I also live close to the water. Anything left outside will get rusty or
show the effects of moisture. I do not store my lenses in any special cases
or in an air conditioned environment.

Just a little note. I dont know if any of this will help you. I would not
go out of my way to take measures to keep everything in a dry environment.

Just my thoughts,

-- Early next year I am going to be spending about 2 months in
-- the wet tropics
-- area of Far North Queensland working with an Aboriginal
-- community group. It
-- will be the middle of the wet season. I am wondering if
-- anyone has had
-- camera experience in very humid (i.e. bloody wet) and very
-- hot conditions.
-- The area I will be in gets about 8.5 metres of rain per
-- annum. (Yep, 340
-- inches or thereabouts). I am planning on taking my LX and a
-- full kit of
-- lenses, in a Doskocil (same as Pelican or Domke) waterproof
-- case and Lowepro
-- Photo trekker. Naturally I will be taking tripod, flash,
-- filters, and all
-- the usual s*&t. Luckily, I will have my own car, so
-- transporting all this
-- stuff is not a problem. I may have a z-1p by then to take (I
-- just sold my
-- z-1), but I worry about electronics and water a lot.
-- Particularly when
-- sudden cloudbursts are 'de rigueur'.
--
-- My main queries are related too moisture, fungus, rust and
-- film. Does anyone
-- have any specific experience with photography under similar
-- conditions? I am
-- concerned about fungus growth, and rust particularly
-- (although most camera
-- parts are alloy or stainless steel). What about film? Any
-- specific problems
-- (heat is not as bad on film as people think either). Fungus growth on
-- lenses? Do the little bags of silica desiccant help?
--
-- Thanks Folks
