I know exactly what you mean by this, but it's a pretty funny comment
in the absolute sense.  An American store with "nothing" to sell is a
pretty relative concept.  I remember once when heavy rains were
predicted (my part of Virginia is prone to floods) many folks stocked up
at the supermarket and some of my friends told me the store had nothing
left.  "Nothing" meant they were out of milk and bread.
