Brad is incorrect. The compensation dial does affect ttl flash output just as you described. I calculate that I've done it about 1500 times this year with AF500FTZ's.
Now, does it work with this particular flash you're talking about? Hell if I know, but it *should* work with any TTL flash. What sort of modification did you make?
