Yep, I had a Vivitar 70-210/4.5 that did the same thing at the longer focal lengths. It was my first experience with "bokeh", though the term was unknown 15 years ago....In fact, I didn't really understand the specifics at the time, but that was the beginning of when I would choose lenses based on how the "total" image looked, including the out of focus areas.
