Hey Dan,It needs a hood because when the lens is racked all the way out and you have strong sun coming in at the right angle you'll get an aperture ghost.
Intriguing, what makes you say that? On the lighter side, I didn't think we
ever admit to Pentax errors? ;-) On the more practical side, I'm looking at
my lens now, read your email and decided to pull it out. By design this
lens has a very thick and long hood. I cannot see a reason for anything
additional. However, I can see it if you are referring to a hood that isn't
of real benefit of shading the lens, but needs one for 'protection' then
sure. But I'll just stick to what I know, Pentax doesn't list one for it
like every other lens that doesn't have one built in, even the cheapest
consumer zooms. They told me it doesn't need it. I respect them. In class
we discussed lenses and the instructor also said because of the construction
of true macro lens, a hood is not necessary. In any case, I'm interested to
hear your reason why it does. I have never had trouble with it in that
respect (usage, just not people telling me so).
Spill yer guts Dan ;-)

Brad
WRT never admitting Pentax makes errors, you're reading a different list than I am. The FA 100/2.8's lettering on the focus limiting switch rubs off, and its aperture ring is too recessed for people with my size fingers to easily adjust it. The FA 24/2 has a cheesy silver surface surrounding the plastic scale window that is incredibly soft and easy to mess up, and the hood design clashes with the lens cap design by not giving enough clearance for my fingers to remove and replace the cap without wearing away the felt inside the hood. The metal lens cap on the 77/1.8 costs way too much for something that falls off as easily and as often as it does. The hood for the FA 35/2 causes flare.
Anyone else got some gripes about Pentax designs? I know there are more than the ones I've listed. Doesn't mean I don't love my kit Brad, just that I'm not blind.

(just dropped my freakin FA 35/2 onto the bare floor from shoulder height and watched it bounce down the freakin hall and bank off a couple of doors !#@$%)
