I am certainly enough of a newbie to know how confusing it is to learn. (Though I've got the basic prinicple down now, but there are other things I still find confusing.) In our class (recently finished), about 1/2 of the students dropped out. When the teacher explained f stops one night (well, actually this was the first night because I asked her which f stop I should probably use on the first assignment because I had an all manual camera and knew diddly about which f stop to choose -- she really wanted to explain f stops later, most had auto cameras with manual override), one of the students asked, "Are you sure this beginning photography???" Doe aka Marnie Hehehe.
