You are right, of course, John. It's just that if you try to go from f/1.0 to the upper reaches of f/64 and above, using 1.4 instead of the square root of two, you get "off" from the standard f-stop values and it can be confusing. I've also found that explaining it as diameters-versus-areas makes it easier for a lot of people to understand. Most people I've explained it to remember "pi are squared" (no cornbread are square, pi are round) ... uh ... A=pi*r**2 and relating it to the area and diameter of the lens iris helps make it clearer for them. TTYL, DougF KG4LMZ
