Hey list,

we run pdns as a hidden primary for two bind nameservers. Pdns and one of the binds are located on the same subnet, the other one is located on a remote site. Zone transfers to the remote one always works like a charme...but we do get errors with the other one quite frequently (but not always):

Jan 22 09:54:57 dns1 named[1150]: client 1.1.1.1#25337: received notify for zone 'somehost.com'
Jan 22 09:54:57 dns1 named[1150]: zone somehost.com/IN: Transfer started.
Jan 22 09:54:57 dns1 named[1150]: transfer of 'somehost.com/IN' from 1.1.1.1#53: connected using 1.1.1.1#42877 Jan 22 09:54:57 dns1 named[1150]: transfer of 'somehost.com/IN' from 1.1.1.1#53: failed while receiving responses: end of file Jan 22 09:54:57 dns1 named[1150]: transfer of 'somehost.com/IN' from 1.1.1.1#53: end of transfer

This is a log extract from the first of the bind nameservers, "1.1.1.1" being the pdns hidden primary.

FYI, both powerdns and bind are running in virtualized (xen) environments, but on different physical hosts. I know this might be a xen-related problem but since we do not experience network problems with any other virtual machine I'm trying to get some information here.

We are running bind 9.3.4 and pdns 2.9.20 (both from standard debian packages). *Usually* bind triggers a retransfer of the zone shortly after the first attempt failed and that one always seems to work fine.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / with kind regards

Rudolph Bott
