Hello Nicholas,

Host on CentOS 5 is also doing a lookup for a AAAA and a MX record. These records are missing in your test zone.

Output tcpdump:
17:53:30.347753 IP 192.168.0.179.32795 > dns1.bondware.com.domain: 30025+ AAAA? www.test.com. (30) 17:53:30.427114 IP dns1.bondware.com.domain > 192.168.0.179.32795: 30025 ServFail- 0/0/0 (30) 17:53:30.430689 IP 192.168.0.179.32796 > dns1.bondware.com.domain: 1109+ MX? www.test.com. (30) 17:53:30.509351 IP dns1.bondware.com.domain > 192.168.0.179.32796: 1109 ServFail- 0/0/0 (30)

This is the source of your two ServFail answers.

I consistently get correct results with "dig" no matter what options I choose (including +norecurs) but consistently get weird results with "host" no matter what options I choose. *scratches head*

Thanks,

Nick

I setup PowerDNS with a MySQL 5 backend on Centos 5 this morning. I put in the "test.com" example records that come in the PowerDNS user guide. When I perform a "host" query, as suggested in the guide, I get this:

Quick answer - haven't had time to read your whole issue. Try reproducing
with 'dig':

$ dig www.test.com @127.0.0.1
and
$ dig +norecurs www.test.com @127.0.0.1

There are very many versions of 'host' around, and it is unsure what they
all do.

However, when I perform a "dig", the results appear normal:

Ah. Well, try the +norecurs thing to see if it makes a difference.
