You are aware of the size limit on UDP replies to DNS queries? Can you repeat the experiments but with a packet capture active? I think that if you look into the issue with said limitation you will see that the response is to big and you are summoned to go from UDP to TCP to perform the query. With the packet capture you should be able to tell if this is a client or server or network problem.
