I could be mistaken but I think the verbiage used ("database") is just
referring to the backend.

Are you certain that the stuff you're piping queries to isn't hanging /
having any issues in that regard? I know you mentioned you're running
having caching however on the outset it sounds like the issue might be
there.

What's your pipe-timeout set to?
