Thank you, I'l do that so I can play with GPS on Linux immediately.

And, I want a challenge. And a victory. Hence writing a Linux driver
for an obscure device. If possible.

Why not just buy a Bu-353?  Very nice devices, and they use a pl2303
usb-serial converter, well-supported by linux.  Only about $65.
