Thanks. That last one shed the most light on it for me.
Not being a lawyer, nor desiring such status, I will leave the fine points to others, but at least I now understand the basic issue: there is a conflict with the new XFree86 license and the GPL, such that to qualify for the GPL you can't use XFree86 4.4. But, not to worry, there are people trying to work it out.
