I don't recall it being a problem to use IMAP mailboxes under Pine. Search Google for "pinerc imap howto" for a number of examples.
It's also pretty easy to use SSH to tunnel an IMAP connection if you'd rather browse IMAP mailboxes from the comfort of your work MUA.
If not, can someone suggest a script that would check mailboxes and display something to standard out if something new comes in?
If what you're trying to do is simultaneously check multiple user accounts, try fetchmail. Create a new account on your home machine that periodically polls the other accounts so that you can view (copies of) messages under a single account.
If none of those suggestions get at what you're looking for, some more detail about your problem would be helpful.
