I bet you still rub sticks to make fire. On servers, obsessive-compulsive 
compiling, and monitoring every single installed bit makes a bit of sense. On 
a workstation, forget it. Then you use a nice package-based system with an 
intelligent dependency-resolver, like apt-get or yum.
