Yes, you need SMP for HT. Can you try it without the ck patch? or try 2.6.9-rc3.
Define gacks. any messages?
Two more things:
a. 2.6.9-rc3 has a Ck patch too.
b. Did you enable ACPI? You have to have ACPI for most modern HT systems to operate.
