I'll keep an eye on rubygems and when they proclaim a solution to the "datadir problem", I will use that. Until then, I will use this neat __END__ hack.
I guess I spoke too soon. In ruby, DATA points to what is after __END__ in $0, not in the loaded file. Hence, this method doesn't work at all in a library.
There is a pending RCR about this problem: http://www.rcrchive.net/rcr/show/213 It has been pending since 2004!? Anyway, I guess I am back to the drawing board.
