I'm using svn+ssh (Fedora Core server, PowerBook client) and it works well. Took a little searching before I settled on the best (client side) SSH key management app but I finally found SSHKeychain<http://www.memerocket.com/2006/11/11/eliminate-subversion-passphrase-prompts-with-sshkeychain/>and everything's smooth. On the server I created an svn user and group and installed subversion as that user. As a result the svn repository is under /home/svn. Then for each user I create a UNIX account (on the server) for him/her and put that user in the svn group. You also have to set up ssh for each such user. I recommend you follow Leo's advice<http://ask-leo.com/how_should_i_set_up_my_linux_web_server.html>on security your SSH configuration -- that's what I did. In particular that page tells how to disallow password-based authentication in favor of certificate-based authentication, and shows how to disable older, less secure versions of the SSH protocol.
