Ok, after spending a couple of hours not seeing my changes published I finally found the Configuration-->Properties menu and noticed the Theme setting was still set to "default" instead of "user-default". After changing that, I got a nice Error page and had to resort to vi and copying files from theme/default into them/user-default to recover. At least I'm seeing changes!
