yeah, windows UI doesn't understand the '.' folder which is at the top
level of the zip archive.

"Do not end a file or directory name with a space or a period. Although the
underlying file system may support such names, the Windows shell and user
interface does not."
Linux allows creating a folder with the name '.' which appears to work fine.
I don't see the source version control history on sourceforge ( where is
the source anyways?) but I am speculating that the following:
<directory>.</directory>
in the file src/assemble/distribution.xml might be causing this problem.
It's used by the maven assembly plugin to create the war I think. It may
possibly also be redundant perhaps.
