Katrin, I think I know what is going on. I know that audacity and the like will let you save a .wav as a single or dual channel file, and you can select right/left channel (once upon a time I was a contributor to Audacity). For some reason that I haven't had the will to track down, I think PEBL chokes on these single-channel files when they are marked as 'left' or 'right'. Apparently, a true mono file is fine, but I haven't tested these difference to know for sure. If this is not the case, let me know, because it might be something deeper.
I think that the easiest workaround is to create a stereo file with one channel silent, rather than a single-channel file marked 'left' or 'right'. I assume that this is the problem, but if not let me know. Alternately, you can use the movie-playback functionality to play mp3 and almost any sound files (including .wav) which uses a different sound system. I blogged about this last summer some time. If you can't make the first way work, I'll try to walk you through the second way.
