Dean,
I was forced to use PADS from the mid to late eighties till about the mid nineties when happened into a place that had a bunch of Protel stuff. At the time if felt like getting out of Jail. Then 4 years ago that place got bought by 3M and all of the R&D staff including myself got ousted. Since then I had to offer PADS because it pays the bills. The board I'm currently working on is 14"X15" and has 7620 pins. For ease of use I doubt anything will ever replace P99SE. P2004 is just a name stealer. While I do it as having great potential I think it was release at a fairly immature state of completion. PADS 2004 is not perfect either and it's online DRC is a real PITA compared to either version of Protel. Obviously I'm biased so I'm sorry I just can't give you the feedback you're looking for.

Joe
I would be interested in hearing how you find the comparison between PADs and Protel, be it 99SE or 2004. I have yet to see a really good unbiased comparison - with backing - of the various packages out there.
I keep hoping to see a really good in-depth article in a rag that actually *builds* a medium-complexity board, start to finish, in each of the packages. Schematics, multi-page, component creation, management, the works.
That would be a huge job, I know, and very difficult to do without bias. I
suppose one way would be to have the author(s) not actually do the work, but
sit in very, very closely, with experts for each package. What I would want
to see is both the highlights of what a package can do really well, as well
as what it *can't* do very well. Plus workarounds.

Export to gerber , use Camtastik to print. It has great control features for printing. I never use Protel to print anything including the text reports. It has to many driver problems and not good enough control.specifytoo many trees

Printing PCB in strict 1:1 scale is not a easy job. Though you could1:1 print scale in Protel, the output may still real 1:1. And even you gotaSuppose1:1 output on one printer, you may not get a 1:1 print on aother printer.
The way I did is make a two round print. Following are the steps:
1) Draw 2 lines on a bland PCB file, one on X , one on Y direction.ofboth of their length are 2 inches. 2) Print the PCB with 1:1 scale in Protel print option. 3)Measure the length of lines on the paper output. 4) If the line length of output is not 2 inches, calculate the adjustment ratio, and enter it into Protel's X scale and Y scale. 5) You could re-do step 2 to 4 to verify it is trule 1:1 on both X, Y direction. 6) Print the final true 1:1 PCB output.
