Well guys, here's (what I hope to be) the final chapter....
After having all the problems with camtastic and protel without a clue to what exactly was biting what and for what reason, I removed both packages from my system.
Checked with various searches in the explorer for remaining stubs (directories, ini files etc): removed all of those. Even manually went through the registry to verify that all references to both packages were gone.
Next step: memory test. No problems found anywhere in the 2Gig.....
I did a clean install of P99SE, SP6 and the tutorial (just for completeness) and saved all the ini, rcs etc files in a zip file and followed all that with a clean install of camtastic.
I then used a dependency checker to find all used DLL stuff for both packages and saved those lists for reference.
After re-installing my rcs files the moment of truth was there: fire up Protel. It worked fine.
Next stop: camtastic.... worked fine, too.
So far, so good......
Back to Protel: it still worked!
The DLL lists showed not a single bit difference. In fact, the problem was gone completely.....
The good news: all is working fine now.
The bad news: I haven't a clue what went wrong in the first place so I expect it to pop up again.....
Thanks Darren and Dennis for sharing your thoughts on this.
