Maybe you are correct Dennis.
        I cannot recall the precise circumstances but I am sure that this 
problem I had years ago was simply related to naming of the footprints. As I 
said, I changed my conventions and it hasn't appeared since and I have 
forgotten the precise details. I know that I don't use "-", "_" or spaces in my 
footprint names and it hasn't occurred since.

        I know that the problem was that it appeared to have made the changes 
but in actual fact it hadn't, while all checks (netlist load, etc.) showed it 
was fine and the changes were made.

we don't have problems with - or _ in footprint names
BUT!
spaces are bad
they prevent the UPDATE footprint from lib from working at all

is this fixed or changed in DXP ?
