Adeel,

we have sent gerbers to different PCB houses in Australia and overseas and have never been asked about this. On the other hand our own assembly people wanted us to mark layers as 'T' or 'B' to make it simpler for their operators to turn the board to the correct side for pick&place machine. If it helps them why not do it?

Cheers,
Igor

Subject: [PEDA] Protel Gerber File Extensions,Are they conform to Standard Industry Practice ???
Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 18:34:09 +0500

Hi All,
My PCB vendor asks me that in order to correctly ascertain
about the identity of Top Layer and Bottom Layer, I should manually
write the string TOP in the Top Copper Layer and string BOTTOM in
the Bottom Copper Layer.
I tell him that this information is embedded in the Gerber File
extensions itself. e.g Design.GTL and Design.GBL means that these files
correspond to Top Copper and Bottom Copper Layers respectively.

I wanna ask whether this naming of Gerber file extensions by Protel
conforms to standard Industry Practice or not ?. If yes, can someone
comment about the legitimacy of my PCB Vendors opinion that I need to
mention the layer name in text manually. ?....

Regards,
Adeel Malik.
