Open drain means there is no built-in pull-up resistor on the drain of the FET. Generally, the source is grounded. Open Source, in this case, means there is no pull-down resistor on the source. But, in this case, I think the person who originally mentioned it probably meant grounded drain or source follower. This is similar to the use of a BJT as an emitter follower. It has a gain slightly less than unity, but is very effective in matching a high impedance output to a low impedance load. This is a non-inverting connection of the transistor.
