EDA software has always been pirated. Especially by students and some businesses who could not afford legitimate copies. That doesn't make it right - it's just a fact. The thing about China (and some other countries) is that IP theft is a state-supported policy. I don't think there is anything that can be done to stop it. As long as software vendors continue to charge big money for their products, piracy will exist. And while lowering the prices will result in increased sales volume to those who want to be legit, it still won't result in sales to those who would rather pirate than pay any money. Scenarios:

1) Charge big money, resulting in few sales, and massive piracy
2) Charge less money, resulting in more sales, and reduced (but still present) piracy 3) Give away the product, but sell support. An iffy business model. It might work if the vendor can offer application expertise in addition to having written the software. 4) Rent the product. Still won't stop piracy, if the executable runs on the renter's machine. Piracy might be preventable if the executable runs only on the vendor's servers. But web apps are notoriously slow.

I don't see EDA bliss in any of these scenarios :-(
