The BOM Sorter by David Watling is a wonderful thing

it is an xls macro

you make a BOM from the schematic in CSV form and it will combine the 
one item per line entries into groups of like components, give the total 
count (quan per) and offers formatting like
C1,C4,C7-C15,C32


below is a thread i saved, somewhere at the bottom is the info where to 
get it
the version info listed here may be stale

I love this macro already.
All I can say is that this Protel discussion list rocks.  I am on a couple
of discussion lists for different programs and this one is the best list.  I
am always surprised at how much the know and how helpful they are.
You guys ROCK!

Yes sometimes there is a little flaming but that just reminds me that I am
using the internet.

i too have been using it for some time

just make the CSV BOM from protel and run this macro to make a useable BOM
