I find the BOM tool rather restricted, even with the additional BOM servers
around. I generally create a .csv file that contains all data I need, one
line per component (nothing grouped). I import that file into a spreadsheet
and then create all views I need there (usually using pivot tables). When
there is a change to the BOM, it's a simple process to just create a new
.csv file and re-import that into the spreadsheet.

One nice feature of this is that it is really easy to create BOMs for
different population versions of a board. Just add markers for the
different components sets to one of the component fields. You can then
select the needed ones in a pivot table and get a list nicely filtered.
