Thanks for the hint Dennis, I found it in the schematic window:   Tools > 
preferences > graphical editing > 'clipboard reference' check box.
I must have visited that particular control panel at least a dozen times... I'm 
obviously blind today.

i imagine the setting is there and that it is off
