Model dari NOAA http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/chile/chileem.jpg Sebuah gempa besar (moment magnitude 8,8 Mw) terjadi di pantai Chile (lokasi episentrum : 35.846°S, 72.719°W), Amerika Selatan hari Sabtu 27 Februari 2010 saat penduduk Chile tidur lelap pukul 03:34:14 waktu setempat (13:34:14 WIB). Gempa berpusat dari kedalaman 35 km yang berdasarkan moment tensor solution berupa pematahan batuan sesar anjak (thrust) dengan jurus 11 deg NE dan kemiringan 25 deg.
