List,

Because of certain off- and on-List comments, I feel it's necessary to
clarify the rule recently instituted regarding a weekly maximum of posts
permitted.

As I wrote when I earlier introduced the limit on daily posts, the
weekly rule is being introduced as an *experiment* to see if it might help
improve List discussion and, principally, to encourage those who post quite
often, to consider posting less often.

Today I received an off List email questioning the new rule, but which also
points to the purpose of the weekly limit as we see it. The email was
written to voice this person's " concern that a 7 post max feels a little
too limiting of a solution, especially if there is a productive
conversation. I hope I am wrong about this and that the new rule does
improve the quality of discussion by making members consider if their
response is necessary or productive before posting."

That is the experiment in a nutshell: will the new rule "improve the
quality of discussion by making members consider if their response is
necessary or productive before posting." If either of the rules prove "too
limiting," Ben and I will reconsider it.

On another point of confusion regarding the weekly limit: The limit of 7
posts per week does *not* mean that one is limited to only one post a day,
but that *the total number of posts should not exceed 7*. This means that
the daily rule is still in effect, so that 2 posts (or even 3 posts if one
is replying to a post someone responded to that day) are quite acceptable
on any given day.

Should you have any questions about or suggestions regarding the two
posting rules please feel free to contact me off-List.

Best.
