Abstract: This talk applies eleven methodological procedures to the
Socratic-Platonic question, “What is God?” Avoiding dogmatic definitions, it
maps the divine across philosophical, religious, and cultural dimensions. The
methods include definitions, quotations, proverbs, jokes, word clouds, Venn
diagrams, opposition theory, the pyramid of meaning, categorization,
typification, and symbolization. By analyzing theology, folk wisdom, and
symbols, it structures diverse conceptions of God, ultimately seeking
clarification over closure to keep philosophical wonder open.
