Stephen & All,
Weekend coming up fast, only have time for a brief reply ...
After our time at UTMB we came back to Michigan and I eventually returned to graduate school in a
systems engineering program at Oakland U (north of Detroit), that being the local bailiwick where
one could do work in AI and intelligent systems. So I did continue my readings in both real and
artificial neural systems as I developed my ideas and implementations of "inquiry driven systems".
Here's a link to how that looked in 1992 ...

Back later ...

Jon, you might be interested in George Mobus' Adaptrode model for neural nets.
His work
originally caught my attention by virtue of it being based in an associative learning algorithm:
http://faculty.washington.edu/gmobus/Adaptrode/Adaptrode1/adaptrode.html A lot of neural-net
architectures are based in what Barto and Anandan (1985) describe as an
Associative
Reward-Penalty algorithm, which received its inspiration from the work of A.
Klopf (The
Hedonistic Neuron). The idea being to develop automata (neurons) that are goal-directed and
learn by association. Goal-directed? Associative learning? There is scope here to relate back
to Peirce's categories.

Stephens, Howard, List,
I spent one of my parallel lives through the entire decade of the 1980s writing
a single program,
beginning in Lisp on a monster mainframe and porting over to Pascal on various
vintages of
various vendors' microcomputers. The hardest part of the nut I had to hack was
the problem of
integrating what programmers would call data-driven versus concept-driven
styles of processing
and philosophy students would recognize as empiricist versus rationalist
approaches to knowledge.
I did manage to get a Masters in psych out of the work, applying the resulting
program to
"protocol analysis" and the exploratory analysis of sequential observation data
in a family
interaction research study.
Susan Awbrey and I wrote up a guidebook that documented the philosophical
sources of the program.
Aristotle and Peirce figured prominently, as I'm sure everyone can guess, and
there was in
addition the work of Gerald Edelman on neural embryology that may be relevant
to our present
discussions. The data structures that I crafted for my program bear some analogy to
the "growth
cones" that figure in neural development.

Stephens, Howard, & All,
The literatures that have been brought to bear and might be brought to bear on
this area are
indeed deep in their historical roots and richly ramified in disciplines and perspectives.
I sampled some of this feast through the 80s and early 90s, in connection with my graduate
studies in quantitative psychology and later statistical consulting, and I maintained a special
interest in the application of mathematical, statistical, AI and systems models
to family
interaction dynamics.
Have to run ... More, later ...
